Ioannis Giannidis was born in Piraeus in 1950. He is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, School of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He studied at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and at the University of Munich, Germany (Dr.Juris). In the years 1983-1984 he was a lecturer (Akademischer Rat) in Criminal Law and Legal Philosophy at the Faculty of Law, University of Munich.
In 1985 he returned to Greece and in 1986 he founded Ioannis Giannidis Law Office. In 2007 the office evolved to Ioannis Giannidis Law Firm. From 2005 until 2007 he was Deputy Chairman and from 2007 until 2009 Chairman of the School of Law, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Since 2015 he is President of the Hellenic Association of Penal Law. He has been advisor to international and greek institutions and member of advisory committees to the Hellenic Ministry of Justice. For 10 consecutive years (2004-2014) Mr. Giannidis was at the board of the largest banking group in Greece (NBG). Since 1993 he was legal counselor to the National Bank of Greece and since January 2014, the Head Legal Counselor to the executive members of the Bank. He is also a member of the Legal Council of the Hellenic Banks Association, since 2014. A member of the Athens Bar Association, he is practicing criminal law since 1986 with emphasis on financial crime.
Ioannis Giannidis has acted as defence/civil claimants’ counsel at the most important criminal law cases in Greece within the last 30 years. He is an expert in financial crime cases (fraud, embezzlement, breach of trust, bribery, money laundering, competition, tax criminal law, contraband offences, European and International Arrest warrant, extradition requests related to financial crime).
